Ohioans are proud that the Buckeye State has produced some of the most successful teams in the United States. Here’s a look at some of the locals’ all-time favorites:

    Cleveland Browns

  • The Cleveland Browns are a football team that plays in the NFL (National Football League) and is a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team was established in 1944 and was named after founder Paul Brown, who also served as its first coach.

The Cleveland Browns are the most popular sports team in the Buckeye State. In an informal survey conducted in 2006, the team was found to have the most loyal fan base in the NFL.

Throughout their history, the Browns have won four championships at the NFL and four championships at the AAFC (All-America Football Conference), a predecessor of the NFL. Their home stadium is the Cleveland Browns Stadium which opened in 1999 and was built on the site of the original Cleveland Stadium.

  • Cincinnati Bengals

  • Playing in the NFL as a member of the AFC North division, the Cincinnati Bengals team was also founded by Paul Brown, the founder of the Cleveland Browns. The Bengals began playing in 1967 in Cincinnati’s Rivertown Stadium, which was their home stadium until 2000 when they moved to their present headquarters, Paycor Stadium. The team has won three AFC championships and appeared in the NFL playoffs for a total of 16 times including in 2022, but have yet to win a championship.

  • Cleveland Guardians

  • The Cleveland Guardians play in the Major Baseball League (MBL) and are members of the American League (AL) Central division. Founded in 1901, the team was known as the Cleveland Indians from 1914 until 2022. Their present name was inspired by the sculptures Guardians of Traffic erected on Cleveland’s Hope Memorial Bridge.

The Cleveland Guardians are known for having the longest winning streak in the American League and the second longest winning streak in MLB history when they won 22 consecutive games from August to September, 2017. The team had won two World Series titles (in 1920 and 1948) six AL pennants, and 11 AL Central Division titles.

The Guardians’ present home stadium is Progressive Field, but before that, they had their headquarters at Cleveland Stadium, which was their home from 1937 to 1993.

  • Cleveland Cavaliers

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers are a professional basketball team playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Eastern Conference Central Division. Founded in 1970, the team first played in Cleveland Arena, then moved to Richfield Coliseum in 1974. In 1994, they moved to their present home, Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in downtown Cleveland.

One of the most notable players of the Cavaliers was LeBron James, who played with the team first in 2003 to 2010, then in 2014 to 2018. Considered one of the greatest NBA players of all time, LeBron led the Cavs to four straight NBA finals and their first NBA championship in 2016 – a win that ended Cleveland’s championship drought in any major league since 1964.
